How to Replace the CMOS Battery on an IBM 600X

By Daniel Barrows, eHow Contributor

The IBM 600X is a laptop computer originally intended for use by corporate and small-business employees; in its standard configuration, the IBM 600X comes equipped with a 500 MHz Pentium 3 processor, 64 MB of SDRAM, 12 GB of hard-drive space and a 13.3-inch TFT display. When it is not in use, the IBM 600X’s BIOS settings are stored in a special type of system memory powered by a CMOS battery. If the BIOS settings on your IBM 600x continually reset themselves after a system shutdown, you may need to replace the CMOS battery. The procedure for doing so is very straightforward. Call today 805-498-0607 to learn more about AB Computer Repair, quality, affordable certified IT support, and data recovery services for business in Ventura, Camarillo, Moorpark, and surrounding areas.

    • 1

Close any active applications and shut down your laptop. Disconnect the power cord and any attached devices. Close the display.

    • 2

Turn the laptop over. Locate the memory module cover near the back-left corner of the device. Loosen the screw securing the memory module cover in place (do not remove the screw). Lift the edge of the cover nearest the screw and work the other edge free from the computer case. Set the memory module cover aside.

    • 3

Locate the cable connecting the existing CMOS battery to the laptop. Use the flat-bladed screwdriver to pry the cable connector free. Remove the existing CMOS battery.

    • 4

Connect the replacement CMOS battery to the same connector as the old battery. Insert the battery in the same location as before.

    • 5

Replace the memory module cover; insert the tabbed end into the case first, then lower the edge with the screw in it. Tighten the screw to secure the cover in place. Return your laptop to an upright position.

    • 6

Reconnect the power cord and any previously disconnected peripheral devices. Installation is now complete, and your laptop is ready for use.

Tips & Warnings

  • The part number for an IBM 600x replacement CMOS battery is 02K6502; you can purchase these batteries from an online supplier (see Resources). As long as the main battery remains installed in your computer, you should not lose any saved settings, such as the current date and time. If your settings have been reset, press and hold F1 during startup to enter the BIOS screen; from here, you will be able to reenter the appropriate settings.
  • Do not attempt to recharge your old CMOS battery or dispose of it in a fire, as it may explode and cause injury. Do not attempt to disassemble your battery or replace one of the internal components, as this may result in injury or damage to your laptop.
