WD external hard drive makes a repeated clicking sound

Answer ID 197   |    Last Updated 01/19/2012

Problem:
A Western Digital external hard drive makes a repeated clicking noise.

Cause:
There can be several reasons why an external drive may be making a clicking noise:

  • The drive is not getting enough power to fully spin up.
  • The FireWire, USB, or ethernet data cable is faulty, or incorrect, for the product.
  • The drive has failed.

We specialize in data recovery in Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks.

How To Repair A Clicking Hard Drive in Westlake Village and Thousand-Oaks.

Solution:
For WD external drives with power adapters

    1. To test if the drive is getting enough power, plug the power adapter directly into a wall outlet. (If your power outlet has a lot of devices plugged into it you may need to plug the drive into a different outlet).

    1. Remove the data cable from the drive. Turn the drive on. If the drive does not click and spins up normally with the data cable removed, the cable may be faulty. Replace your eSata, FireWire or USB cable.

Call AB Computer Repair today to find out more about our certified data recovery services in Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks and surrounding areas.

Note: If your drive won’t turn on without the cable connected to the PC, you will have to try using another cable with the drive instead.

  1. If the drive stops clicking then the drive is good, but the cable is bad. Replace the cable. If the drive is still clicking after you remove the cable (or try another cable), you will need to replace the drive. Information about in-warranty replacement is available in Answer ID 8: How can I replace a product under warranty?.

For WD Passport external drives

    • The clicking noise may indicate that you are using a USB cable longer than 18 inches (22 inches for Passports manufactered prior to 2007). This drive will not obtain enough power from the USB port on the computer if a USB cable longer than 18 inches is used.

    • You could be connected to a USB Hub and therefore not getting enough power to spin the drive up fully. Disconnect the drive from the Hub and connect it directly to the computer.

    • Your computer or laptop may not be putting out enough power through the USB port to spin the drive up fully. If you need additional power, you can purchase a supplemental Power Booster Cable (Not currently available for My Passports using the USB Micro connection) from the WD Online Store. Otherwise, please use the USB cable that was supplied with the WD My Passport.

  • If the drive is still clicking, even after you have tried the drive on another PC, changed the cable, and used a power booster cable, then you will need to replace the drive.
